Basement IdeasBeing banished to the basement is not necessarily a punishment! Currently, homeowners with basement space that would consider recording the prime square, everything from the play room hobby room,, a media center, music rooms, poker parlors, exercise area, office space and of course, was the original purpose, storage space, is seeking a new life in space “below.” Definition of the basement is an area that is fully or partially below ground. This is not to be confused with the crawl space of the house, because another part of this definition is that a person must be able to stand upright in the area.

Total square footage in the basement is generally equivalent to that on the ground floor. In most homes, it’s like having another entire level of living space, which can add up to quite a bit! The option to utilize the amount of space really is limited only by imagination, because the space normally would have electricity and plumbing. This basement can be partitioned off into different rooms or can be one big open space. If this part of your home is “finished” then consider yourself lucky. If not, or, if the renovation of existing space in the To Do list, there is a problem that must be considered before continuing the project.

First, it is important to identify “problem” spots such as lowering the ceiling, an enclosed boiler, and ductwork. Second, the space must not be leaking. Uncontrolled humidity will cause several problems including the dangerous and damaging mold growth.

After the identification and remediation of problem areas of the basement is finished, the next step is to determine the layout of the room. The task can be overwhelming, and a good way to start is by determining the activities that may take place in space. Check out the pictures or on what others have done always helped jump-start the imagination.

Please note that the basement will have little or no natural light so consider this when planning the layout. Slowly but surely, this space will spring to life and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! Next time you think it’s no big deal, remember that over time, excessive exposure to UV rays can cause eye conditions, including retinal damage and even cataracts. So whether your eyes please – eat your carrots and make sure to bring sunglasses with you all the time!
