Going up the stairway you past a wall bookshelves, storage and display space. Once in the loft you can work in a quite atmosphere without being cut off from the rest of the house. Corner desk is a compact radio station with room for typewriter and broadcast microphone. Twin canister type lights beam down on desk area. Two built in wall units provide three kind of open storage shelves: regular bookshelves slanted magazine racks and vertical slot above the desk. Home improvement architect: Peter Van Dyke.

His office is a writing studio

Cork-board lines one side of this small rectangular office storage unit on the other side has bookshelves, magazine racks and typing cabinet. Two filling cabinets support the walnut desk top. Typing cabinet has slide out top for typewriter, open shelves for paper and telephone books. Adjustable recessed lights clamp on desk light, and natural light provide ample illumination. Reflected light is important too. The lighter the wall and ceiling color the more reflection you’ll have. You can bounce a directed beam of light of a white wall to supplement general light. The desk shown at the top of the next page benefits form spotlights reflecting of a sloping ceiling.

Four sources of light in one study
